Midlife Anxiety and Burnout: Three Science-Inspired Practices You Can Do at Home to Ease Your Stress

Midlife can bring a quiet kind of overwhelm. One moment you’re handling life’s responsibilities as usual, and the next you find yourself feeling anxious, emotionally stretched, or questioning where you’re headed. It’s a time when the nervous system feels taxed, old patterns can resurface, and the body begins to call for deeper rest, healing, and change.
Rather than pushing through, this chapter invites a more nourishing approach—practices grounded in science that meet you where you are, support your emotional landscape, and help you manage and cope.
1. EMDR-Style Bilateral Music – Clearing the Emotional Static
EMDR-inspired music uses bilateral audio stimulation—alternating tones that move from left to right through headphones. This mimics what’s done in therapeutic EMDR sessions, where rhythmic stimulation helps the brain process and re-file emotional experiences that feel unresolved or overwhelming.
In midlife, past experiences can resurface without warning. Bilateral music gently helps the nervous system unwind, encouraging the mind to release tension and gain perspective. There’s no need to ‘figure it all out’—you simply listen, allowing the left-right rhythm to support the brain’s natural healing process.
I often use EMDR-style music while studying or enjoying my morning tea—it helps me stay grounded and focused without feeling overwhelmed.
Try it by searching for “EMDR bilateral music” on your preferred streaming platform. Listen while resting, walking, journaling or even before sleep. It’s a subtle but powerful way to recalibrate—and can be done easily at home with headphones.
2. EFT – Tapping into Calm
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a simple yet effective practice where you tap lightly on specific acupressure points while acknowledging how you feel. It’s a blend of energy medicine and emotional honesty that signals safety to your body and calms the fight-or-flight response.
During midlife, anxiety and burnout often stem from accumulated stress, unspoken needs, and the relentless pace of doing. EFT gives you a way to pause, meet yourself in the moment, and regulate your system. You don’t need to suppress what you’re feeling—you just let it move through.
A basic round of tapping takes only a few minutes and can be done anywhere—in your kitchen, during a break at your desk, or when you wake up with a racing mind. All you need are your own hands, making it an accessible and practical tool.
NSDR – Deep Rest Without Sleep
NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) is a practice rooted in yogic traditions that guides the body into a deeply relaxed state while the mind stays aware. It’s often done through a 20-minute audio where you’re guided to scan through your body, breathe consciously, and drift into a restorative brainwave state similar to deep sleep.
This is especially supportive in midlife, when sleep can become fragmented and energy feels stretched thin. NSDR provides the kind of replenishment that even a nap can’t always reach. It lowers cortisol, boosts focus, and soothes the nervous system—all without needing to ‘do’ anything except listen.
If I’ve had a rough night’s sleep, I often start my mornings with NSDR to set a calm tone for the day ahead. Lying down and listening to a guided NSDR track helps me reset and prepare my nervous system for whatever comes next.
Many NSDR tracks are available online. Put on comfortable clothes, lie down on a mat or sofa, pop in your earbuds, and follow the voice. It’s a restorative practice you can create in your own living space.
These practices are wonderful tools to support your wellbeing, but they don’t replace professional help when deeper healing or guidance is needed. They complement coaching, counselling, and mentoring by helping to regulate your nervous system, build resilience, and create new self-care rituals.
