I had no idea where I was going, but I knew I’d be moving soon. I also knew that this move was deeply connected to my purpose and life’s work—almost like a rite of passage.
Instead of preparing a comfortable, safe, and secure nest like an expectant mother, I found myself doing the opposite. My home and everything inside it suddenly came under scrutiny. I wasn’t buying, organizing, or creating; I was dismantling, emptying, and unravelling 15 years’ worth of home, memories, and belongings. I donated, discarded, detangled, and detached—a tough yet necessary process that began a year before the actual moment my children and I pulled away in a taxi in the early hours of that cold, dark December morning in 2014.
Destination: Tropical Goa, India—home for the last four years.
As you upgrade and transform, life as you know it will change too. To step into an aligned space that matches what you are seeking to improve or create, your current reality may need to crumble to make space for the next, better, upgraded version. The more we resist, the more abruptly these shifts tend to hit us.
A common mistake we make is wanting or needing the new to arrive before we muster the courage to let go of the old. We wait for stability before we take the first step. As humans, we crave certainty and security. When those are absent, it can feel deeply uncomfortable—sometimes even paralyzing.
While comfort is essential for thriving, it is not synonymous with radical change. The uncertainty and discomfort of deep transformation can feel so intense that it often causes people to quit prematurely, retreating to the familiar. Fear plays a huge role in this, and while it must be acknowledged, it doesn’t have to lead to disappointment.
By consciously managing the process, you can set yourself up for a successful, joyful, and lasting transformation. Here are three key teachings to help you navigate this phase and move closer to actualizing your dreams, desires, and highest potential.
1. Create Comfort within the discomfort
To progress, we must spend more time in our ‘discomfort zone.’ New ways of thinking, fresh habits, changes to our routines, environment, and relationships—all of these shifts often happen simultaneously. Growth requires us to do, think, and act differently, and different is often uncomfortable.
However, much of this discomfort is rooted in the mind. The good news? We can override it. Stagger your changes, replace the old with the new gradually, and integrate at least one daily activity that brings you comfort and ease.
Allowing yourself a moment of joy each day will give you a well-earned break from discomfort, helping to reset your nervous system and trick your mind into feeling safe. My go-to? Watching an episode of Friends—it works every time.
For you, it could be something entirely different: a heart-pumping run, a conversation with a close friend, or even enjoying your favorite childhood meal. By intentionally creating small moments of comfort each day, you can not only survive this phase but thrive well into the success zone of your transformation.
2. Create a bubble
Periods of change can leave us feeling drained, vulnerable, and more sensitive than usual. The emotional and mental demands of transformation put us in a naturally weakened state.
Your energy is shaped by what you consume—food, media, conversations, and even the company you keep. Prioritizing nourishing foods, hydration, and gentle movement will help sustain you.
Just as important is protecting your space. Surround yourself with those who uplift and support you, and create a bubble of positivity around yourself. The last thing you need is pressure from people who don’t understand your vision.
During times of transformation, your mindset can be the deciding factor in your success. If your mind is working against you, you will struggle to complete your journey. A simple yet powerful practice is to dedicate five minutes, three times a day—morning, afternoon, and evening—to positive thoughts and affirmations.
Be honest about what is draining or unsupportive, and make a firm decision to put yourself and your success first during this process.
3. Trust the process—Things are always working in your favour
This isn’t just a tip—it’s a mindset shift. The number one factor that blocks transformation is fear.
Fear shows up in different disguises, and often, we mistake our excuses for truths. We convince ourselves that our doubts are valid, which prevents us from even starting—let alone completing—a powerful upgrade.
The truth is, if life has brought you an idea or inspiration, it has also brought you the strength and resources to see it through. As humans, we are wired to evolve. The desires we feel—especially those that push us toward growth—are not random. They are breadcrumbs leading us toward our next chapter.
Doubt can be just as destructive as fear. We question our ability to make good decisions, to follow through, or even to deserve the change we seek. But here’s the thing: you can’t make a wrong decision if it’s coming from a place of deep yearning.
No matter which direction you take, you will never truly lose—you will only learn.
